upcoming exhibit at the museum of fine arts

we've already mentioned the avedon exhibit that will be on display at the mfa in boston beginning august 10, but i wanted to talk about it again because the date is quickly coming upon us. avedon is one of the greatest fashion photographers in history and i think this exhibit will be important for boston because our city is not necessarily flocked to by fashion lovers. for me, avedon is iconic because of the way that he portrayed fashion and his pictures tell a story that can be interpreted differently by each viewer. the photos below are some of my favorites from avedon's portfolio.

avedon fashion 1944-2000

C and I went to the MFA today and when walking through the galleries we saw a sign for the Richard Avedon exhibit opening this August 10th. Avedon was one of the greatest American fashion photographers of all time and we are SO excited to view his work. I would die to have one of his prints in my apartment.

Richard Avedon. 1949.

Avedon Fashion 1944-2000 is GORGEOUS and definitely on my wish list...

spring in boston

once again, spring is upon us and for me, spring means dining outside, drinks during the day, the beach, and fun times with friends. in boston, spring also means opening weekend of the sowa market. located in the south end of the city, the market gives an opportunity for local designers, artists, bakers, and more to showcase their products and sell to the public. opening weeks is may 15 and 16 from 10am - 5pm, with free admission and parking.

monday {trip to zimman's}

Today I have class 10-1 then I am heading to Zimman's - a huge fabric warehouse in Lynn. I've been once before and I'm excited to get lost in aisles and aisles of fabrics all afternoon. I only have two more weeks of class left so I'll be looking for beautiful samples for Baystate Road as well as some fun prints for the new apartment.

kor floral

It's been a busy week so I haven't been able to post much, but wanted to quickly share the work of floral designer, Alexandra Kadar, at Kor Floral. Pat and I stopped by ACQUIRE last night for the opening of several installations she did for the shop, and it's pretty cool stuff. I love her unique 'rebel' approach to floral design and the idea of plants and flowers as art installations vs. just something pretty to look at. Check out the Kor Floral website to view some of her amazing work. And if you're in the North End, stop by ACQUIRE (61 Salem Street) to view the cool light bulb installation she did in the front window.

Off to spend hours working on my project for class... while painting our dining room table and chairs so we can finally have a place to sit down and enjoy a meal in our new apartment. Have a wonderful weekend!

an upcoming addition to one of boston's finest museums

one of my favorite museums in boston, the isabella stewart gardner museum, has been featured in the wall street journal. the director of the historic museum, anne hawley, is profiled in the article and speaks about the infamous heist that ocurred in 1990 and resulted in over 13 stolen artworks, including rembrant's sole seascape, "the storm on the sea of galilee". she also speaks about the $114 million expansion planned for the museum, which will open in 2012.

cocktail hour {barlola}

This weeks cocktail hour is a suggestion vs. a recipe. Last weekend 12 of us went to BarLola for tapas and A LOT of red wine sangria. We had a lot of fun - drinks were great, atmosphere is cool (it's kind of tucked underground) and the food was pretty good too. We didn't stay for the bar scene after dinner so I'm not sure how that is, but this place is definitely work checking out if you're in Boston's Back Bay with a big group.

beacon hill condo for sale

This condo listing located at 284 Cambridge Street in Beacon Hill popped up on my homepage (boston.com) this morning and I thought it was too cute not to share. It's a 2 bed+ and although the living area is a little tight, you get what you pay for in the beautiful walnut floors and exposed brick details. I love the french doors leading into the bedroom (which looks like it's front facing and gets tons of light). And the blue-gray on the wall (I am searching for the perfect shade!) looks really pretty against the warm orange tones in the brick and artwork. When Pat and I first moved to the city we looked at Beacon Hill (which is so adorable with it's turn of the century architecture and narrow, cobblestone streets - Charles Street has some great restaurants and shopping too) but we couldn't afford anything that we liked and therefore ended up in the North End (still a fabulous area to live in but a little more attainable). Maybe someday though...?

cocktail hour {the boston girlfriend}

I haven't tried Absolut Boston yet - a black tea and elderflower flavored vodka inspired by the great city of Boston. I've heard mixed reviews, but when I came across this recipe for the 'boston girlfriend' (or the 'Absolut Boston equivalent to a pomegranate cosmo') I was intrigued, if not just for it's name...

boston girlfriend

- 1 1/2 oz Absolut Boston
- 3/4 oz PAMA liqueur
- 1 oz cranberry juice
- 1/4 oz fresh lime juice

Combine everything in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake to blend and chill. Strain into a cocktail glass and garnish with an orange slice.

Recipe from the intoxicologist.

industrial interiors

there is a great article in the globe about restaurants and stores that are beginning to use sustainable furniture and salvaged accessories increasingly more, especially with the economic downturn. the use of flea market materials, scrap lumber, and other old, once useless items create homey spaces that fit in more than sleek and modern spaces that may intimidate rather than inspire.

i'm in lucky magazine!

OK, not me, but one of my photos is! Lucky's October issue features a shopping report on Boston's North End, which includes a little write-up on ACQUIRE - the fabulous home accessories boutique on Salem Street that I interned at this past spring. The photo is small, but it's still pretty cool to see my name in the fine print. Thanks, Nikki, for sending it in!

small and super cool in boston

This South End condo was featured in Apartment Therapy's small cool 2009 and it's easy to see why. The 820 square foot home belongs to Brad Dufton, co-owner of colorTHEORY, a boston-based paint/wallpaper/interior design company. The painted ceiling is really beautiful and accentuates the 13' high ceilings. I'm obsessed with all the architectural details - and the floors!!! Such a nice contrast to the cool greys and black.

For some recent pictures and an interview with Dufton and his business partner, Benjamin Scott, visit Boston.com. Here's a sneak peek:

I am heading back to Boston for the weekend so most likely I won't be posting until Sunday or Monday. Casey and I are going to Billy Joel / Elton John on Saturday and I could not be more excited. Have a great weekend!
